What is awe?

Awe is described as an overwhelming feeling of reverence, admiration, or fear produced when we encounter something that is grand, transcendent or vastly powerful. The feeling of awe can be inspired by the beauty and immensity of the natural world, a sublime work of art or some other human accomplishment performed on a heroic scale.

Challenges and Commitments of practice.

Feelings of awe can sometimes terrify us or make us feel insignificant. This often comes from a dualistic way of looking at the world around us. We glance up at the spiraling arms of the Milky Way and think that it is “out there” beyond us – we do not realize that while we may be observers of it, we are also an integral part of it. Also, the enormity of the universe reminds us of how much we do not know and presents us with a paradox: how do we embrace both mystery and certainty at the same time?
