What is vipassana?

Thought to be the form of mediation taught by the Buddha himself, Vipassana lies at the center of the Buddhist tradition. Often called "insight mediation," Vipassana involves the practice of prolonged attention to sensation, often starting with the breath, with the goal of cultivating a greater awareness about the true nature of existence. Many individuals point to vipassana as the "parent" of contemporary mindfulness techniques.
