What is creative visualization?
Creative Visualization is a practice that is used to intentionally generate visual mental imagery for the purpose of changing the emotions and feelings of the practitioner. Creative Visualization can help individuals transform their perceptions which can lead to a variety of physiological and psychological benefits. This process is used to alleviate anxiety, decrease pain and support self-esteem.
How do I practice creative visualization?
A simple way to begin practicing creative visualization is to choose a common object as the focus of your meditation. For example, you might choose a glass of water. What are the qualities of a glass of water? The surface is calm, the water is clear, and water itself is essential to life and contentment. After quieting yourself, begin to visualize the calm surface of the water, its clarity and the contentment that drinking pure water can bring. Now slowly repeat these words while visualizing the glass of water: calm, clear, content. Repeat just one of the words to yourself on an out-breath and visualize the glass as you do so. Gently repeat this short cycle and you will be practicing creative visualization. There are many other creative visualization techniques - but this is a refreshing way to start!
