An intention is simply how we would describe a goal, aim or purpose that we hope to achieve through a planned action. Many philosophers, educators, and spiritual/religious teachers consider intention as absolutely foundational to the success of any course of action. Mindfully setting an intention and honestly questioning our intentions are central to an ethical, responsible and ultimately successful life.
How can I be sure that my intentions are good or realistic?
We are all familiar with the old saying that, “the road to hell is paved with good intentions,” this reminds us that discerning what is a good or healthy intention is not a simple task. Before deciding on an intention, ask yourself some tough questions: Does this intention reflect your best self? Is it realistic? Is this intention already present in you – like a seed waiting to sprout and grow? Or, is this intention something imposed on you from without by feelings of inadequacy, jealousy, or fear?
