“A labyrinth is a symbolic journey . . . but it is a map we can really walk on, blurring the difference between map and world.” "

What is a labyrinth?

Since ancient times the labyrinth has been a symbol of both complexity and unity as well as an actual physical creation intended for the purpose of ritualized walking meditation. Labyrinths typically have convoluted paths, but unlike a maze they offer a single path that directs the walker to the final “destination” - often a central terminus. In Medieval Europe, labyrinth patterns were embedded in the floors of cathedrals to offer pilgrims the opportunity to make symbolic pilgrimages to Jerusalem. In modern times labyrinths have become a popular way to practice walking mediation.
