What is Mindful Inclusion?

Mindful inclusion is a term applied to intentional bias reduction efforts within organizations such as businesses and schools. These are efforts to purposefully cultivate an awareness of our internal biases towards others in an effort to help us recognize the way that we might be "labeling" them unconsciously. A growing number of practitioners and trainers are using mindfulness techniques as a tool to help us recognize internalized fears and prejudices.

How do I practice Mindful Inclusion?

There are a variety of techniques involved in the practice of mindful inclusion. Most involve a focused observation of our own responses when we are asked to consider interacting with someone different from ourselves and then to imagine how those responses might be playing out in our daily lives and routines. How do you feel when you imagine encountering someone who might be disabled or from a different race, religion or sexual orientation? Do your feelings have real world consequences for the way that you treat your co-workers and others? These simple questions lie at the heart of mindful inclusion.
