What is Spiritual Directors International (SDI)?

Spiritual Directors International is a global, contemplative nonprofit working to encourage all human beings on their individual spiritual journeys. We have more than 6,000 members spread across 41 countries -- trained spiritual directors who offer support and companionship to people so that they may integrate spirit with the rest of their lives to feel whole. We invite everyone to join us on the Public Square of Spiritual Direction, where all people are welcome with their spiritual traditions intact - or no tradition at all. We respect the spiritual independence of each person and believe our lives grow richer and deeper, the more we embrace the diversity of faith and practice. We honor listening as the active art that allows spiritual knowledge to emerge. We work on the assumption that all beings are connected, and that this connection often is revealed in mysterious and wonderful ways. As a nonprofit organization, Spiritual Directors International is devoted to educating and supporting the noble people who choose spiritual direction as a calling. Join us on the path of awareness, practice and presence. Not everyone has a religion, but everyone has a spirit. Why not choose to know that spirit in an authentic way? Now is the perfect time to accept yourself, and begin the journey of a life-time.

What is SDI's mission and vision?

Throughout human history, individuals have been inspired to accompany others seeking the Mystery that many name God. SDI is a learning community that educates and supports this service around the world and across traditions. SDI believes spiritual companionship and deepening into the sacred transform individuals, society, and all creation. SDI connects seekers with spiritual companions. It's a multi-faith community that helps nurture the dreams of holy ones.

How did SDI get started?

SDI started from a small gathering of spiritual directors of Christian faith at Mercy Center in Burlingame, California, USA, in 1989. The community has grown to now include more than six-thousand members on six continents who represent more than fifty spiritual traditions.

What is Spiritual Direction?

Spiritual direction is a mentoring relationship between a seeker and a spiritual guide. Like psychotherapy, it can be offered as a one-to-one or group experience in private sessions with spiritual mentors who have most likely completed extensive formation for the ministry and service of spiritual direction. It is up to you to choose a spiritual director who has the training, formation, and experience that suits your needs.
