What is Transcendental Meditation?

Transcendental Meditation (TM) is a specific form of mantra meditation associated with Maharishi Mahesh Yogi who founded the TM movement in the 1950’s. The technique found fame in the West after the Maharishi (spiritual teacher) became the guru to the Beatles and other celebrities in the 1960’s. TM remains one of the world’s most widely used meditation techniques. The TM technique has been described as both a religious (affiliated with Hinduism) and as a non-religious meditation technique.

How do I practice TM?

Certified TM instructors teach the practice in centers across the globe. TM meditation involves the use of a mantra and is typically practiced for 15–20 minutes twice per day. While meditating, individuals practicing TM close their eyes, sits in a comfortable chair or position and repeat the mantra that’s been assigned to them by their instructors.

Challenges and Commitments of practice

Unlike some forms of meditation and mindfulness practice, TM requires a seven-step course of instruction from a certified teacher.
